Rockin' Rican's Reviews

December 2000
depoet and the Monkey: "depoet and the Monkey" - A few days ago I'm at my local record store looking for something different to purchase. Bored with everything out there I searched around like a man in a desert wandering aimlessly for water. Hungry and exhausted I stumbled upon the artwork of Puya's CD cover. Hum, I mumbled to myself. Why not, rock in Spanish. What a concept! Combining sultry Latin beats with razor sharp heavy guitar riffs and bilingual lyrics, this Puerto Rican band has torn down that stereotype that we Latinos don't know how to Rock. Guess again, you're wrong! This CD has 12 sizzling tracks that cover a wide range of lyrical and musical influences that the band members grew up with in Puerto Rico. The music is definitely a tribute to the island's unique cultural mix. While guys are crushing their heads moshing, the ladies will be gyrating their hips to the salsa beats. Wake-up and beware America. Rock en Espanol Lives! Be afraid, very afraid. Viva Puerto Rico Libre & Viva Puya!

Earth Minus One: "FRANCE + FRANCE = FRANCE" - The boys from Dutchess County are back with their sophomore release, and this time they've taken no prisoners. If you're a follower of EMO then you already know how good they are, and if you're not you have no choice but to purchase this 14 track CD, actually 15 tracks since they do not list a live cut as numero 15. For a taste of their diverse catalog, I recommend you log on to Listen.com and check out their 3 songs on MP3 online. Then you can tell me what category they fit in cause I can't. That's the reason I thoroughly enjoy this CD, and can't wait to see them live.
