The Rockin’ Rican persona that you’ve enjoyed during the last six months
has been laid to rest. Let us bow our heads and morn it’s passing. I would
like to thank all of my faithful readers for your encouragement and support.
My goal for this column during the coming months is to provide a medium that
will make everyone open up their eyes to certain issues that will make them
think and go hmm! I will continue to give you an alternate view of life as
well as continue to do CD reviews submitted by the vast talent that exist in
this region. I hope you will enjoy these views and encourage you to write to
me as you’ve done in the past. Peace! G.A.
Paul Robinson: “Sweet” - With this 11 song debut CD, Cleveland based Paul Robinson who was profiled in last months More Sugar, has made this album for people “who like music that has a cinematic quality, and who like to seriously sit down and listen to music” as stated in his press release. Combining various styles from blues to rock to jazz to pop, Paul has done what he set out to do with the help of some famous artist. An accomplished guitarist who has previously performed with Al Stewart, Steve Winwood, David Sanborn, Bob Weir, and Don Was, Paul does not try to be flashy with his playing, but presents us with well crafted tunes while using 21 different guitars on this project. Some highlights for me were the upbeat and powerful “F.U.”, the jazzy horn dominated “Guilty as Charged”, as well as the two instrumental cuts “Psycho Soul Theme”, and “Rosie”. Downloads are available from his web site www.paulrobinson.com. Lambbone: “Am What I Am” - this 10 song CD includes seven tracks written by frontman John Lamb. This Connecticut based band offers the listener blues laced with some jazz and a touch of rock similar to Ben Folds Five. Band members with John Lamb include guitarist Frank Demaio, bassist Dave Livolai, and drummer Kirk Snedeker. John’s vocals has that Randy Newmanish quality to it while the lyrics are both serious and humorous. Favorite tracks include “Hero”, “Eyes on the Boys”, and “I Am Who I Am”. Free downloads can be found at www.LambBone.com or www.MP3.com. Upcoming shows include the Westport Library in Westport on Jan. 14th at 2:00pm and at Jimmie’s Seaside in Stamford on Jan. 26th at 9:00pm. depoet & The Monkey/Straight 8 at Acme Underground Sat. Dec 16, 2000 Straight 8 - With their U2ish guitar licks, steady beat, tight musicianship, seminal lyrics, and fantastic rapport with the crowd, these 3 lads from Queens, N.Y. caught my attention with their 10 song performance at the Acme Underground last month. Lead by vocalist/bassist Alex Hegyia, and supported by drummer Marc Greco and guitarist Andy Quinn, Straight 8 were having a grand ole time on stage to the point that they threw in a couple of harmonic doowoppish ditty’s just to make sure the audience was paying attention. They have a bright future ahead if they continue with their positive attitude. Next month I’ll review their demo CD. depoet and The Monkey - Covering the majority of their songs from their debut CD (reviewed last month) as well as others from their new EP, depoet and The Monkey packed more buzz than a six of cold suds. In this topsy turvy world of musical identity crisis dp&M has a serious idea of what they want and how to get it. With David DePietro at the helm dp&M is definitely a band that should be reckoned with. |
